The Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Environment and HIV and AIDS forms part of the five Departments in the organisational Structure of the Secretariat of Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA). The Department was established right at the inception of TUCTA in 2001 and became operational in 2002.

The Department is charged with the responsibility of coordinating matters relating to occupational safety and Health, environment and HIV and AIDS in cooperation and collaboration with TUCTA’s Affiliates. It advises and formulates trade Union Policies in matters of occupational safety and Health and HIV and AIDS to guide TUCTA’s Affiliates accordingly. The Department also renders expertise/technical services in training and conducts workplace campaigns for sensitization and awareness raising of national Policies and laws in respect of Occupational safety and health.

The Director of OSH and HIV and AIDS works in consultation with theNational TUCTA OSH and HIV and AIDS Committee which is comprised of one Representative from each TUCTA’s Affiliate who is responsible for OSH matters in the respective affiliated Union.

Currently, the Department is manned by Dr Meja Kassim Kapalata who is a Medical Doctor and Lawyer by training.

He has been Director of the Department since 2002.
